Onam 2020: Ram Nath Kovind, Narendra Modi, Amit Shah wish public on occasion of harvest festival

Palghar lynching case: Three police personnel dismissed from service; 154 people arrested over incident

Palghar: Three police personnel have been dismissed from service in connection with the Palghar mob lynching case in Maharashtra, a senior official said on Sunday. These police personnel include assistant police inspector Anandrao Kale, who was in-charge of Kasa Police Station in Palghar when the incident took place on 16 April, the official said. Two others are assistant sub-inspector Ravi Salunke and constable Naresh Dhodi, he said. "The Inspector General (IG) of Police, Konkan Range dismissed the trio from service through an order issued on Saturday," the official added. These three police personnel, along with their five other colleagues, had been placed under suspension following the incident, he said. Two seers and their driver were lynched by a mob at Gadchinchale village in Palghar on 16 April when they were travelling in a car to Surat (Gujarat) to attend a funeral amid the coronavirus-induced lockdown. IIT Indore introduces course delving into classical sciences, mathematics texts in Sanskrit

The Indian Institute of Technology in Indore has introduced a unique course to impart mathematical and scientific knowledge from ancient texts in Sanskrit, an official said on Saturday. Titled " Understanding Classical Scientific Texts of India in an Immersive Sanskrit Environment" , the course was started to in a bid to expose the present generation to ancient knowledge, the official from the institute said. The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE)-sponsored quality improvement programme began on 22 August and will continue till 2 October with a total of 62 hours of online classes, he said. Over 750 candidates from all over the world were participating in the course, he added. “Ancient texts of India, originally composed in Sanskrit, have a rich heritage of mathematical and scientific knowledge and the present generation is unaware of this. Dr Padmavati passes away at 103: Eminent doctor, popularly called 'godmother of cardiology in India', succumbs to COVID-19

New Delhi: Noted cardiologist Dr S Padmavati has died at 103 due to COVID-19, the National Heart Institute said on Sunday. She was undergoing treatment at NHI for the past 11 days, doctors said. "Dr S Padmavati, an eminent cardiologist, rather the first female cardiologist of India, popularly known as ''God Mother of Cardiology'' passed away on August 29 due to COVID-19 infection," the NHI said in a statement. Founder of NHI, she was born in Burma (now Myanmar) in 1917, a year before the world was hit by the Spanish Flu pandemic. "She was admitted with COVID-19 and had breathing difficulty and fever. She developed pneumonia in both lungs and needed ventilator support. However, she sustained a cardiac arrest and passed away," the NHI said. Dr Padmavati was cremated at the designated COVID-19 crematorium at Punjabi Bagh on Sunday, it said. She had migrated to India in 1942 during World War II. Jammu:  A Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) of the Indian Army was killed on Sunday in a firing  along the Line of Control (LoC) in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir, defence sources said. The firing from across the border started soon after the Indian Army noticed some suspicious movement along the LoC in Nowshera sector, sources said. They said the Indian troops retaliated strongly and in the exchange of firing, a JCO was hit by a bullet and later succumbed to injuries. PM's Mann Ki Baat: Time to be vocal about local toys, India can become hub for world, says Narendra Modi

New Delhi:  Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said India has talent and ability to become a toy hub for the entire world and called upon startups to work towards realising this potential while being "vocal about local toys". He said the global toy industry is over Rs 7 lakh crore but India's share is very small, as he stressed on the need to work to increase it. Modi called upon start-up entrepreneurs to ''team up for toys'' and said it is time to get vocal for local toys. In his monthly ''Mann Ki Baat'' broadcast, the prime minister also said people have shown an unprecedented restraint and simplicity in their festivals during the COVID-19 pandemic. He also hailed farmers for increase in sowing area for different grains. "This is a time for festivals but at the same time, there is also a sense of discipline among people due to the COVID-19 situation... There is a close link between nature and our festivals," Modi said.

Sushant Singh Rajput death: CBI summons Rhea Chakraborty for third round of questioning

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) called actress Rhea Chakraborty for the third consecutive day on Sunday for questioning in the case of death of her boyfriend and filmstar Sushant Singh Rajput, a police official said. The 28-year-old actor is accused of abetting Rajput's suicide. The CBI also called her brother Showik Chakraborty for the fourth day in a row for questioning in the case, the official said. Chakraborty and her brother reached the DRDO guest house at Kalina in Santacruz, where the probe team is stationed, around 10.30 am, he said.
