Sensex drops over 185 points in early trade; Infosys, TCS, Reliance track losses

Mumbai : Equity benchmark Sensex dropped over 185 points in early trade on Monday, tracking losses in index-heavyweights HDFC twins, Infosys, TCS and Reliance amid a weak trend in the Asian markets. The 30-share BSE index was trading 189.52 points or 0.37 percent lower at 51,233.36 in initial deals, and the broader NSE Nifty fell 43.20 points or 0.28 percent to 15,392.45. M&M was the top loser in the Sensex pack, shedding more than 5 percent, followed by Infosys, HDFC, IndusInd Bank, Tech Mahindra, L&T, NTPC and HCL Tech. Odisha extends lockdown till 17 June; check what’s allowed and restricted in the state

The COVID-19 lockdown in Odisha has been extended till 17 June. Previously, the lockdown was supposed to end on 1 June. As reported by Mint ,  Odisha chief secretary SC Mohapatra said that like the previous two phases, the third phase of the lockdown is aimed at restricting the movement of people, not goods. According to a report in Hindustan Times ,  Mohapatra said that the state had to face the dual crisis of COVID-19 and Cyclone Yaas last week. Uttar Pradesh relaxes lockdown in all but 20 districts from 1 June onwards

Lucknow : The Uttar Pradesh government on Sunday relaxed the COVID-19 lockdown from 1 June allowing shops and markets outside containment zones to open for five days a week, but it would not be implemented for now in 20 districts where active cases are over 600. Once the tally of active COVID-19 cases in these districts falls below 600, relaxation will be implemented there, said Uttar Pradesh Chief Secretary RK Tiwari. The 20 districts where there would be no relaxation yet are Meerut, Lucknow, Saharanpur, Varanasi, Ghaziabad, Gorakhpur, Muzaffarnagar, Bareilly, Gautam Buddh Nagar, Bulandshahr, Jhansi, Prayagraj, Lakhimpur-Khiri, Sonbhadra, Jaunpur, Baghpat, Moradabad, Ghazipur, Bijnor and Deoria. Two children from rural Karnataka contract black fungus; both critical

Bengaluru : Mucormycosis, commonly known as black fungus, which was till now affecting only adults, has been detected among children as two cases were reported in rural Karnataka. A 11-year-old girl from Ballari district and 14-year-old boy from Chitradurga district have been infected with the fungal disease. Both are undergoing treatment at government hospitals here and their condition is said to be serious. They had contracted COVID-19 but were not aware of it, a health official said adding they were admitted to the hospital after they developed complications. "Two children are undergoing treatment for the black fungus infection at Government Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospitals. They are suffering from Acute Juvenile Diabetes (AJD)," a senior health official told PTI . The official added that they are in a critical state. COVID-19 deaths, positivity rate in West Bengal less than first wave, claims Mamata Banerjee

COVID-19 lockdown: Haryana extends curbs till 7 June; malls to reopen, shops to follow odd-even rule

Chandigarh:  The Haryana government on Sunday extended the coronavirus-induced lockdown in the state by another week till 7 June, easing restrictions on shop timings which will now be allowed to stay open from 9 am to 3 pm on odd-even days. The state government termed the lockdown "Mahamari Alert/Surkshit Haryana (Epidemic Alert/Safe Haryana)". Addressing a virtual press conference, Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar said even though the COVID-19 situation has improved in the state, it has been decided to extend the "Mahamari Alert/Surkshit Haryana" lockdown till 5 am on 7 June with some more relaxations. He said shops which were earlier allowed to open as per odd-even basis from 7 am to 12 pm will now be open from 9 am to 3 pm. "While majority states have favoured the option proposed by the CBSE about shorter duration exams for major subjects in August, the COVID-19 situation is still being reviewed and cancellation of exams and marking students on basis of previous exams is still an option," a source said. Meanwhile, the CICSE board has asked its affiliated schools to submit average of marks obtained by class 12 students in class 11 and during this session. While there is no clarity from board whether the exercise hints at possible cancellation of exams, schools have already started working to meet the 7 June deadline set by the board. New Delhi: The Centre has asked states and union territories to initiate legal or administrative action against institutions which are giving a 'vaccine package' for in collaboration with hotels in violation of prescribed guidelines. New Delhi:  The Delhi child rights panel has identified 32 children who have been orphaned during the COVID-19 pandemic in the National Capital. Panaji: The Goa education board, which cancelled its Class 10 final exams this year, has formulated a scheme for finalising the results of students based on their internal assessment conducted by schools during the academic year and an objective criterion developed by the board. The Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education's (GBSHSE) executive committee met on Saturday and prepared the scheme, which will have to be followed by all the schools affiliated to it. Fire breaks out in residential building in Delhi's Saket Court area, 83-year-old dead in blaze

New Delhi: A 83-year-old wheelchair-bound man, the father-in-law of an additional district and session judge, was killed, while she and her three other family members were rescued after a fire broke out at a house inside a residential complex in south Delhi's Saket Court on Saturday, officials said. The deceased, identified as Ashok Talwar, died allegedly due to suffocation after inhaling smoke. He was wheelchair-bound and lived with his son, daughter-in-law and two grandchildren inside the residential complex, they said. The Fire Department received a call around 5.23 pm about the blaze at the house on the fourth floor of block C, they said. Seven fire tenders were rushed to the spot and the blaze was doused, fire officials said. New Delhi: The Delhi High Court will decide on Monday whether to allow the continuation of the Central Vista project work during the prevailing Covid pandemic. A bench of Chief Justice DN Patel and Justice Jyoti Singh, which had been hearing a plea for suspending the ongoing construction work during the Covid pandemic, has fixed 31 May for delivery of its judgement on it, the high court’s cause list revealed on Saturday. The court had reserved its judgement on 17 May on the joint plea by Anya Malhotra, a translator, and Sohail Hashmi, a historian and documentary filmmaker. The two had contended in their plea that the project was not an essential activity and can be put on hold for time being. During the 17 May hearing, the Centre had termed the plea as a "facade" or a "disguise", aimed at stalling the project. This is part thirteen of a  series  profiling the stories of these people. *** Forty-year-old Madanpal Singh comes from Kasampur village on the banks of the river Ganga. Located near Bijnor city in Uttar Pradesh, his village is one of the many that were severely affected as the second wave of COVID-19 wreaked state. “There is no family that the disease has left unaffected,” says Singh, adding, “there is at least one individual in each family who is unwell.” In a total population of 4,000, Singh informs that hundreds have been afflicted with fever while six people have died.
