Petrol and diesel prices remain unchanged; check prices in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata

The prices of petrol and diesel remained unchanged on Wednesday, a day after they were revised. On Tuesday, the rates of petrol and diesel were slashed across cities in India following the fall in the prices of international crude oil. The rates of fuel were revised on Tuesday after four consecutive days of no change in prices. The fresh numbers on the Indian Oil Corporation’s (IOC) website show the price of a litre of petrol in Delhi is Rs 90.56. A litre of diesel, on the other hand, costs Rs 80.87 in the national capital. In Mumbai, while petrol is available at Rs 99.98, diesel costs Rs 87.96, still the highest in the country among the top four major cities. Before Tuesday, the rates were revised on 25 March after remaining the same and at record highs for over three weeks. On 25 March, the petrol prices were cut by 21 paise per litre, while diesel was cheaper by 20 paise. In Kolkata, a litre of petrol will cost Rs 90.77 while the prices for a litre of diesel stood at Rs 83.75. I

Uttar Pradesh extends closure of schools for students of upto Class 8 till 4 April

Lucknow : Amid a spike in coronavirus cases, the Uttar Pradesh government on Tuesday extended to 4 April the closure of all schools for students up to Class 8, according to an official. Earlier, the state government had shut schools for students up to Class 8 till 31 March. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath issued the fresh directions during a review meeting at his 5, Kalidas Marg residence. The CM has directed the closure of schools for students up to Class 8 till 4 April, an official spokesperson said, adding that it has been ordered to ensure that the COVID-19 protocol is followed for other classes. The CM asked officials to step up testing with focus on old age homes, orphanages, residential schools and other such places. The CM said the dedicated COVID hospitals made earlier should be reactivated. Assam Assembly polls: 8 newspapers get EC notice over ad claiming BJP's victory in phase 1

Guwahati: The Election Commission of has issued notices to eight newspapers of Assam which carried an advertisement of the BJP in the form of a headline claiming that the party will win all 47 seats where elections were held in the first phase on Saturday, officials said. The notices were sent to the newspapers following a complaint filed by the Congress alleging that the advertisement violated a directive of the ECI, the model code of conduct for the election and the Representation of People Act, 1951. In the notices, Assam Chief Electoral Officer Nitin Khade asked the newspapers to send a report clarifying their position to the Commission by 7 pm on Monday. India reports 68,020 new COVID-19 cases in 24 hrs, tally crosses 1.20 crore

New Delhi: India saw 68,020 new coronavirus cases in a span of 24 hours, the highest single-day rise so far this year, taking the country's COVID-19 tally to above 1.20 crore, according to Union health ministry data updated on Monday. Registering a steady increase for the 19th day in a row, the active cases have increased to 5,21,808, which comprise 4.33 percent of the total infections, while the recovery rate has further dropped to 94.32 percent, the data stated. A total of 68,020 new cases were reported in a day, the highest recorded since 11 October last year, taking the country's tally of cases to 1,20,39,644, while the toll increased to 1,61,843 with 291 fatalities, the data updated at 8 am showed. As many as 74,383 new cases were recorded in a span of 24 hours on 11 October. The active caseload was at its lowest at 1,35,926 on 12 February comprising 1.25 percent of the total infections. Validity of driving licence and other vehicle documents extended to 30 June, 2021

With the COVID-19 pandemic picking up steam again in parts of the country, the government has further extended the validity of driving licences and other vehicle documents to 30 June, 2021. This is the fourth such extension since the pandemic began, the earlier deadlines being 31 July, 30 September and 31 December of last year. The documents covered under this are those mentioned in the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 and Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989. This includes driving licences, fitness certificates, vehicle registration documents and permits. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has issued an advisory to states stating that these documents which have expired after 1 February, 2020 be considered valid up to 30 June, 2021. The ministry has requested states to treat these documents as valid in 'letter and in spirit' and this will help road users keep using their road-based transport and prevent crowding at RTOs etc. In fact, the government recently moved a lot of RTOs

Srinagar: Security forces have seized a cache of arms and ammunition, including five AK assault rifles, from an area close to the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir's Kupwara district, an army official said on Monday. "In a major success to security forces deployed in Karnah, a huge recovery was made in the late hours of Sunday owing to high state of alertness of the army and police," the official said. New Delhi: President Ram Nath Kovind on Sunday gave his assent to a bill that accords primacy to Delhi's Lieutenant Governor (L-G) over the elected government. The central government announced the presidential assent to the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill, 2021 through a gazette notification. According to the legislation, the 'government' in Delhi means the 'Lieutenant Governor' and the city government will now have to seek the opinion of the L-G before taking any executive action. Parliament passed the bill last week -- Lok Sabha on 22 March and Rajya Sabha on 24 March. New Delhi: The NIA has alleged that PDP youth leader Wahid-ur-Rehman Parra is involved in "dirty" gunrunning, providing finance to terror groups and being "part of the larger conspiracy" hatched by Pakistan-based terrorist outfits to make "inroads" into important institutions in Jammu and Kashmir to carry forward their secessionist agenda. Delhi govt issues SOP to protect interfaith, inter-caste couples from harassment; sets up 'special cell', 24-hr helpline

New Delhi: The Delhi government has issued a standard operating procedure (SoP) for the protection of inter-faith and inter-caste couples from harassment and threats and directed setting up of ''special cells'', headed by deputy commissioners of police, to look into such matters. According to the SOP, the government will provide accommodation in its ''safe house'' to those couples whose relationship is being opposed by their families or the local community or khaps. The government said the existing 181 toll-free women helpline of the Delhi Commission for Women will serve as a round-the-clock helpline to receive from inter-faith and inter-caste married couples complaints of threat and harassment and provide necessary assistance. "The telecallers trained to handle distress calls and already aware about available services can provide necessary assistance/advice to the couple in distress. Nagpur: Maharashtra home minister Anil Deshmukh on Sunday said a retired judge of high court will conduct a probe into the allegations of corruption levelled against him by former Mumbai police chief Param Bir Singh. The truth will come out after a probe into the matter, Deshmukh told reporters at the Nagpur airport. On 20 March, Singh in a letter to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray created a flutter in Maharashtra's political circles by claiming that Deshmukh wanted police officers to collect Rs 100 crore monthly from bars and hotels. Deshmukh had then trashed the allegations against him. Under fire over handling of the bomb scare outside industrialist Mukesh Ambani's house in Mumbai, the state government on 17 March transferred Singh from the post of city police commissioner to the low-key home guard department.
