New Delhi: Supertech’s twin towers in Noida, Uttar Pradesh – both taller than Delhi’s iconic Qutab Minar – will be demolished on Sunday (28 August) around 2:30 pm. The towers are expected to be brought down in less than 15 seconds by waterfall implosion technique. Notably, Supertech’s illegal twin towers in Noida’s Sector 93A will be the tallest structure yet in India to be demolished. Meanwhile, the evacuation of around 5,000 residents in the neighbouring societies – Emerald Court and ATS Village – has been completed by 7 am today. Most of the residents have already moved out, many of them last evening itself, police officials said. Why are Noida’s Supertech twin towers being demolished? Considered to be India’s tallest building, Noida twin towers are being demolished following a directive from the Supreme Court. The demolition of the twin towers in Noida will put an end to the decade long battle between the builder group – Supertech and the residents around the twin towers. Th

In Kashmir, fear and cheer grip nonlocals as politics over voting rights heats up

Srinagar: The framed photo of a Hindu Goddess hung on a wall. On large trays, sweets meant for sale in the market remained neatly arranged. In a shop, cooked chickpeas were served to people. In a field young men dug land and several miles away a man fixed the puncture in the tyres. In a dusty village, a group of people worked to haul up raw bricks into the brick kiln. All these routine activities of daily life involving nonlocals went on away from the media glare on the all-parties meeting which was convened by the former chief minister and NC president, Farooq Abdullah, at his Gupkar residence on 22 August after the authorities said that those settled here from rest of India can vote in the elections in Jammu and Kashmir. Political parties including the amalgam of the People’s Alliance of Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) — which was constituted to work towards the restoration of Article 370 — have opposed the voting rights of the nonlocals in Jammu and Kashmir and this came after a serie

The yajamāna: The critical importance of Subrahmanyam Jaishankar

A few days ago, I was listening to External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar talk about India’s path in a volatile world where nothing is certain anymore as he launched a volume of essays about the country’s soft power called Connecting through Culture , where I co-wrote the first piece with Kerala Governor Arif Mohammad Khan on Indian soft power in material and spirit. The minister gave a particularly nuanced speech (and in many ways not at all the usual spiel that one is accustomed to hearing from politicians on occasions like the one I was attending). He said that the book he was releasing was in a sense a ‘good cop’ product. It spoke about all the positive reasons. But soft power operates, said Jaishankar, in a spectrum. At one end was the gentle storytelling, in the middle was influence peddling, and on the other end was dominance and projection of dominance. India, said the minister, mostly played in the gentle storytelling part of the spectrum but it was important, in
