The Rashtriya Lok Dal, a Samajwadi Party supporter, has called for a unified opposition in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, claiming that no front can effectively oppose the BJP without the Congress. The comment by the RLD’s Uttar Pradesh unit chief Ramashish Rai, made ahead of the opposition parties’ meeting in Patna on 23 June, is significant in light of Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav’s assertion that seat distribution should be determined by which alliance partner is strongest in a given state. The opposition parties will meet on 23 June, convened by Bihar Chief Minister and Janata Dal (United) leader Nitish Kumar, to plan their strategy for the Lok Sabha elections. “The RLD is in favour of a united opposition. Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a letter to G20 leaders has proposed giving the African Union full membership in the group at the upcoming summit in India. The prime minister has taken a “bold step” to enhance Africa’s voice on the international stage and in shaping the future of “our shared world”, sources said on Saturday. The African Union consists of 55 member states. “He (PM Modi) has written to G20 counterparts to propose that the African Union be given full membership at the upcoming Delhi Summit of G20, as requested by them,” said a source. “The Prime Minister has led from the front on this matter, which he strongly advocates and supports,” the source added. In fresh violence, two civilians were injured as mobs clashed with security forces overnight in Imphal town and attempts were made to torch the houses of BJP leaders, officials said on Saturday. Automatic gunfire was reported from Kwakta in Bishnupur district of Manipur and Kangvai in Churachandpur district through the night. Besides, an attempt was also made to loot of Iringbam police station in Imphal West. However, no weapons were stolen. The CBI conducted searches at 25 locations in connection with an FIR registered against 21 BSNL officials, including a former general manager over corruption, officials said. The central agency alleged that the accused officials entered into a conspiracy with a contractor to cheat the government-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL). The CBI registered the FIR against officials of BSNL Assam Circle, including a former general manager, deputy general manager, assistant general manager, and chief accounts officer in Jorhat, Sibsagar, Guwahati and other places, they said.
